Getting Your Passport Back After the U.S. Visa Interview
If the visa is approved, the consular section keeps your passport to print the visa in it. Getting it back is handled by the appointment service's courier, not the embassy — and the rules are set per country, not per system. Two countries on the same platform can give you a different deadline for the same decision.
Everything below was read on the official appointment sites on 21 September 2026, one country at a time.
"Approved" is not "Issued"
The status you are waiting for is Issued. USTravelDocs India says so directly:
If the status shows "Approved," please wait until it is updated to "Issued." Once the status is updated to "Issued," passports are typically returned to you within 4 – 6 business days and a notification via SMS and email will be sent as soon as your passport is ready for pick-up.
That is India's figure, not a global one. It also means the wait you are counting has two separate stages, and only the second one is the courier's.
The courier's own clock is short
Once the consular section hands the documents over, AIS states the same figure for Mexico, Brazil and the United Kingdom:
Once the U.S. Consular Section turns over the visa documents to the courier, it takes up to 3 business days for the documents to be ready for pick up or delivery.
So a long wait after an approved interview is almost always adjudication time, not delivery time. Chasing the courier does not move it. Check your CEAC status instead.
Where it goes was decided when you booked — and the deadline to change it differs
You chose a pick-up location or delivery address while scheduling. Changing it later is possible, but the cut-off is not the same on the same platform:

Four countries on one platform, three different answers. The Philippines page explains why the shutter comes down at all: "After that time, the delivery data will have already been provided to our courier and cannot be changed." India gives you a day less than China and the Philippines; Vietnam closes it before interview day entirely.
Vietnam adds a separate rule for interview-waiver applicants, and it is tied to a document rather than a date:
Applicants may only update their delivery information before generating the Interview Waiver confirmation page. Notice: On the day of the interview or after the Interview waiver confirmation page has been generated, applicants cannot change the delivery method or delivery address.
So on the dropbox route in Vietnam, printing your confirmation page is the moment the address is locked — which can be weeks before anything else happens. Vietnam's courier is Nhat Tin Logistics, tracked by UID or airway bill at ntlogistics.vn.
If you are moving house, changing city between booking and interview, or planning to have someone else collect, settle it before your own post's cut-off — afterwards there is no route.
If you do not collect it, it goes back to the consulate
Every AIS country we read states this rule, and the number is not the same:

All three return the package to the originating consular section. Brazil's page says "documents"; Mexico's says "passports". Do not carry one country's figure across a border — that is the same trap as the DS-160 correction deadlines, where one platform gives three business days and another two.
Home delivery: three attempts, then it becomes your problem
AIS states in Mexico, Brazil and the UK that the courier "will attempt to deliver your package up to 3 times". What happens next is country-specific, and Brazil's version costs you the most:
- Brazil — the package returns to the originating CASV/DSC "and it will require a pick up appointment." A failed delivery turns into another appointment.
- Mexico — it returns to the Applicant Service Center.
- United Kingdom — it returns to the consular section, and the courier leaves a calling card after an unsuccessful first attempt.
In all three, a home delivery is released only to an adult willing to sign; a business address releases to staff authorised to sign for packages. Nobody leaves a passport on a doorstep.
Someone else collecting for you
This is where the detail matters most, because turning up without the right paper means a second trip.
- Mexico and the United Kingdom — an adult applicant may authorise a third party with a signed letter naming them in full, a photocopy of the applicant's ID, and the third party's own matching ID.
- Brazil — there is a second route most people miss. On the 'Delivery Details' page there is a 'Care of' field: enter the representative's name exactly as it appears on their ID when you book, and they present that document. The authorisation letter route also exists.
- Thailand — USTravelDocs requires you to present your original ID card or an official government-issued card to collect.
- Parents collecting for a child — a copy of the birth certificate or adoption decree showing a parent's full legal name, plus that parent's matching photo ID.
Paid delivery upgrades exist, and they are not refundable
Mexico offers Premium Delivery — a DHL branch or home delivery in covered cities and postcodes. The page states the fees are non-refundable and non-transferable to another applicant. Paying for a faster return does not make the adjudication faster, and you do not get it back if the visa is refused.
Thailand charges you at the door
USTravelDocs Thailand's notification email includes "the cash-on-delivery amount for the service" alongside the tracking number. Have the money ready — this is not mentioned on most countries' pages.
What we could not verify
The AVITS countries — Nigeria, Ghana, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and nine others — run on a third platform whose country pages would not render for us on 21 September 2026. We have deliberately not guessed at their figures. If you are on AVITS, read your own post's instructions; the AIS and USTravelDocs numbers above are not evidence about it. Frequently asked questions
How long after the interview do I get my passport back?
Two stages. The visa has to be adjudicated and reach Issued status, which no service can predict, and then the courier takes up to 3 business days in the AIS countries we read. India publishes 4 – 6 business days from Issued. A long wait is nearly always the first stage.
My status says Issued but nobody has contacted me. What now?
Wait for the courier's notification — an email, and in India and the Philippines also an SMS, sent when the package is ready at your chosen location. The status changing is what starts the courier's own clock, not the end of it.
Can I change where my passport is delivered after booking?
Sometimes, and the deadline is set per country even on the same platform. China and the Philippines allow it until 11:59 p.m. on the interview day; India until one business day before it; Vietnam only before the interview date, and for interview-waiver applicants only before the confirmation page is generated. Check your own post's page rather than a neighbour's.
What happens if I never collect my passport?
It is returned to the consular section that issued it — after 30 days in Mexico and the United Kingdom, 60 days in Brazil. Retrieving it then means dealing with the consulate directly rather than the courier.
Can my spouse, driver or employer collect it?
Yes, with the right paperwork: a signed authorisation letter naming them, a copy of your ID, and their own matching ID. In Brazil you can instead name them in the 'Care of' field on the Delivery Details page when you book, which avoids the letter entirely.
The courier could not deliver to my address. Do I lose the passport?
No. After three failed attempts the package goes back — in Brazil to the CASV/DSC, where you will need a pick-up appointment; in Mexico to the Applicant Service Center; in the UK to the consular section.
Do I get the delivery fee back if my visa is refused?
Not for Mexico's Premium Delivery, which the site states is non-refundable and non-transferable. A refusal does not reverse fees you have already paid, and neither does the MRV fee.
