What this DS-160 photo checker verifies

  • Square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels
  • File size under 240 KB
  • Head height between 50% and 69% of the image
  • Eye position between 56% and 69% from the bottom
  • Plain white or off-white background with no shadows
  • Face centred, forward-facing, and fully visible

Why DS-160 photos fail, and how to fix each one

Head too large or too small
The most common failure. Your head must measure 50% to 69% of the image height, chin to crown. Crop wider if it is too large. If it is too small, move closer and retake rather than enlarging, which softens the detail.
Background not plain enough
A wall that looks white often carries a colour cast or a shadow gradient. Stand about half a metre from it so your body casts no shadow, and light the wall separately from your face.
Shadow across the face or under the chin
Caused by a single overhead light. Face a window in daylight, or use two lights at 45 degrees either side. Avoid direct flash, which flattens the face and creates a hard rim shadow.
Photo is not square
Phone cameras shoot 4:3 or 3:4, never 1:1. The image must be cropped to a perfect square, and cropping after framing is why many photos then fail the head-height rule as well.
File larger than 240 KB
Phones produce 3 to 6 MB files. Re-save as JPEG at a lower quality setting rather than reducing the pixel dimensions below 600 × 600, which would fail a different check.
Digitally altered or filtered
Beauty filters, skin smoothing and background replacement are all rejection grounds, and many phones apply them by default. Turn off automatic enhancement before taking the photo.

Full specifications, including glasses, head coverings and infants, are on the DS-160 photo requirements page.

DS-160 photo tool questions

Is this DS-160 photo tool free?

Yes — it is free, needs no account, and has no upload limit. Your image is processed in your browser.

Will passing this checker guarantee my photo is accepted?

No tool can guarantee acceptance. This checker verifies the measurable requirements — size, dimensions, framing, background — but a consular officer makes the final call on appearance and quality.

Does this tool change my photo?

It can crop, resize and re-save your image so the file meets the requirements. It never edits your face or your background, because altering either is itself a rejection ground. If the photo fails on background or lighting, the tool tells you, but you have to retake it.

Can I use a phone photo?

Yes, if it has even lighting, a plain white background, and a straight-on angle. Arm’s-length selfies usually fail on angle and distortion — have someone else take it.

Why does the DS-160 confirmation page show an X instead of my photo?

That means the upload failed CEAC’s own check. Fix the file here, re-upload, and bring a compliant printed photo to the interview as a backup.

What size does the DS-160 photo have to be?

A square colour JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, under 240 KB. Your head must fill 50–69% of the image height. Anything outside those bounds is rejected by the upload itself rather than by an officer, which is why checking before you upload saves a repeat attempt.

How recent does the photo have to be?

Taken within the last 6 months, and it must reflect your current appearance. Reusing the photo from an older application is one of the most common causes of rejection — including reusing one that was accepted for a previous visa.

The visa centre takes a photo at the appointment. Do I still need to upload one?

Yes. The digital photo you upload to the DS-160 and any photo taken later at an application centre or interview are separate steps. The upload happens near the end of the form, before you can submit it.

Do I need a printed photo as well as the upload?

Some posts ask for one, and the printed specification is different: 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), not a pixel size. If your upload failed and the confirmation page shows an X, bring a compliant printed photo to the interview.
