How to Retrieve Your DS-160 Application

Q: What about the security question?

The security question does not recover a lost ID. It works the other way round: you need the ID and the security answer together to reopen an application. Losing either one closes that route.

Q: Why does CEAC say my information does not match its records?

Make sure you selected the same consular location as the original application, typed the surname letters exactly as they appear in the form (not necessarily your passport), and used the year of birth you entered on the form.

Q: Did you mean the security and background questions?

Two different things share the name. The security question on this page is the personal reminder you chose when you started the form, used with your Application ID to reopen it. The security and background section is the run of yes/no questions about health, crime and immigration history near the end of the form — those are explained in DS-160 security and background questions.

Q: Does a submitted DS-160 also expire after 30 days?

No. The 30-day rule applies only to saved, unsubmitted applications. Once you submit, the confirmation page and its barcode stay valid — retrieving a submitted application is for printing the confirmation again, not for keeping it alive.

Q: Can I retrieve a DS-160 without the Application ID?

Only with a saved .dat file, which restores the application under a new ID. A submitted form can also be reached through its confirmation page. Without either, there is no way in.

You can return to a saved DS-160 — or reopen a submitted one to reprint the confirmation page — on the official CEAC website. You will need the Application ID shown at the top of your form (it starts with AA) and the answers you provided when you started the application.

Retrieve a saved application

Go to the CEAC Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application.
Select the same embassy or consulate location you chose when you started the form.
Click Retrieve an Application.
Enter your Application ID (begins with AA).
Answer the identity checks: the first five letters of your surname, your year of birth, and the answer to the security question you selected.
Your application reopens where you left off. Save frequently as you continue.

The 30-day expiry rule

A DS-160 that has not been submitted is kept on CEAC for about 30 days from the last time you saved it. If you do not open and save it within that window, it is deleted and cannot be recovered — you must start over.

Two ways to protect your work:

Re-save regularly. Each save restarts the 30-day clock.
Save the application to your computer. On the DS-160 pages, use the Save Application to File button to download an application file (.dat). This file has no expiry date.

Restore from a saved file

If you downloaded an application file, you can restore it even after the online copy expired:

Go to CEAC and select your location.
Choose Upload an Application (instead of Retrieve).
Select the .dat file from your computer.
A new Application ID is issued — note it down, along with your new security answer.

Retrieve a submitted application

A submitted DS-160 cannot be edited, but you can retrieve it with the same steps to view and reprint the confirmation page with its barcode. See our confirmation page guide for printing and troubleshooting.

Lost your Application ID?

This is the most-asked question about the DS-160, and most of what is written about it online is wrong, so here is the plain answer first.

There is no lookup service for a lost Application ID. CEAC has no "forgot my ID" flow, no support line that will search for it, and no way to find your application from your name, passport number or email address. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.

The ID is a ten-character code beginning AA. What you can do is find where a copy of it already exists:

Search your email. If you entered an email address when starting the form, the ID may be in a CEAC message or in something you sent yourself.
Check screenshots and downloads. The ID sits at the top right of every page of the DS-160, so it appears in almost any screenshot of the form.
Look for a .dat file. If you ever clicked "Save Application to File", that file restores the whole application and issues a new Application ID — you do not need the old one. See restore from a saved file.
Already submitted? The Application ID is printed on the confirmation page, next to the barcode. If you printed or emailed it, you have the ID.

If none of those turn anything up, start a new application. That is not a setback in the way it sounds: an unsubmitted DS-160 is only kept for about 30 days anyway, so a form old enough to be lost is often expired already. Record the new ID and download the .dat file before you close the tab.

Answers are case- and spacing-sensitive on some fields. Try the exact form you typed originally. If you cannot recover the answer, restore from a saved .dat file or start a new application.

I forgot my DS-160 security question answer — can I recover it?

No, and there is no reset link or support channel that will look it up. The answer you chose is the only key to that saved application. Two things are worth checking before you start over: whether you downloaded a .dat file, which reopens the form without the security answer, and whether the application was already submitted — because if it was, you may not need to reopen it at all. What the interview requires is the confirmation page, not access to the form.

I forgot my DS-160 Application ID — can I get it back?

Why did my saved application disappear?

If more than 30 days passed since the last save, the application was purged. Restore from a .dat file if you have one; otherwise start over.
