DS-160 for F-1 Student Visas: Step-by-Step Guide

Every F-1 student visa applicant completes the same DS-160 as other nonimmigrant applicants — but several fields work differently for students, and getting them wrong is a common cause of interview-day corrections. Before you start: documents to have ready

Form I-20, issued by your school after admission — you'll copy the school's information and your SEVIS ID from it.
Passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
Admission letter and your program start date.
A compliant visa photo — check it with our free photo tool.

Student-specific DS-160 answers

Purpose of trip

Select Academic or Language Student (F) → Student (F1). Your spouse or children traveling with you apply as F2 dependents with their own DS-160s and their own I-20s.

SEVIS ID and school information

The U.S. Point of Contact / SEVIS section asks for:

SEVIS ID: the number starting with N printed at the top of your I-20.
School name and address: copy them exactly as they appear on the I-20, including the campus address if your school lists one.

A SEVIS ID that doesn't match your I-20 is one of the most common student DS-160 errors — it can force a new form before your interview.

Address where you will stay in the U.S.

If you don't have housing yet, use your school's address. Update your actual U.S. address in SEVIS after arrival — the DS-160 answer doesn't need to be your final dorm room.

Intended date of arrival

Give your honest estimate tied to your program start date. F-1 rules allow entry up to 30 days before the program start date on your I-20.

Work and education history

List your current school and prior education fully. If a consular officer sees gaps, expect questions at the interview. Students with sponsors should be ready to explain who is funding the program — consistent with the financial evidence your school reviewed for the I-20.

The two fees students pay

SEVIS I-901 fee — currently $350 for F and M students — paid separately on fmjfee.com against your SEVIS ID. Pay it before your interview (some countries require it before scheduling) and keep the receipt.
MRV visa application fee — $185 for F visas — paid through your country's appointment system after the DS-160. See our country-specific fee guides.

Paying the MRV fee does not cover SEVIS, and paying SEVIS does not cover the MRV fee. You need both receipts.

After the DS-160: scheduling and the interview

Print the confirmation page with the barcode.
Pay the MRV fee and schedule the interview — F-1 appointments can often be booked closer to the date thanks to student priority at many posts during peak season.
Bring: passport, DS-160 confirmation page, I-20 (signed by you and your school official), SEVIS fee receipt, MRV fee receipt, admission letter, transcripts and test scores, and evidence of funding.

Common F-1 DS-160 mistakes

Wrong SEVIS ID or school address — copy from the I-20, not from memory or the school website.
Submitting before receiving the I-20 — you need the SEVIS ID to answer the student section correctly.
Inconsistent funding answers — the DS-160, your I-20 financial figures, and your interview answers should tell one story.
Missing prior U.S. travel — J-1 summer programs and B-2 visits count; omitting them is treated as misrepresentation, not forgetfulness.
Choosing the wrong visa class — degree-seeking students are F-1, not J-1 (exchange programs) or M-1 (vocational programs).
