Booking a U.S. Visa Appointment in Ukraine
Applicants in Ukraine book through USTravelDocs, not AIS, and there is one post — the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv.
Nothing can be booked until the DS-160 is submitted and the visa fee has activated. The general sequence is on how to book a U.S. visa appointment; this page covers what Ukraine publishes and does not repeat elsewhere.

Check what is actually being scheduled before anything else
USTravelDocs puts a notice above Ukraine's interview information that it does not put above most countries:
For the most up-to-date information on visa services currently available at U.S. Embassy Kyiv, please visit the embassy website.
On the day we read it, the embassy's own consular map listed Kyiv as a location where services are provided, and we found no notice suspending them. We cannot tell you which visa categories are being scheduled in any given week, and we are not going to guess — the wording "currently available" is the embassy's, and it is there for a reason. Read ua.usembassy.gov before you build travel around an interview date, and treat anything on this page, or any other site, as secondary to what the embassy says today.
Arrive 15 minutes early — not earlier, not later
You should arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to go through security. Upon arrival, applicants need to take a place in line according to their scheduled appointment time.
Fifteen minutes is a specific instruction, not a suggestion, and the queue is ordered by appointment time rather than by who arrived first — so turning up two hours early gains you nothing. Note that this is the opposite direction from Kathmandu, which asks applicants not to arrive more than ten minutes early. Two posts, two numbers, both in the same booking system.
Almost no one may come with you
No third parties are allowed to enter the Consulate with the exception of minor children under 16, who must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or individuals who have specific permission from the Consular Section.
Under-16s with a parent, or someone who has been given permission in advance. Everyone else stays outside — and Kyiv is explicit that outside is not a comfortable place to wait.
Car keys, medication and opaque folders
Ukraine's prohibited list breaks from what neighbouring posts allow, in three ways that catch people out.
Car keys are prohibited. Beirut permits car and house keys; Kyiv bars them outright. If you drive to the interview you have a problem the embassy does not solve, because there is no storage.
Medication is prohibited — "pills, sprays, syringes, etc." Lima allows essential medication in plastic containers, and Dhaka excludes medication from its food ban. Kyiv does neither. If you take medication during the day, this needs planning rather than improvisation.
Folders must be transparent.
Documents in non-transparent folders. Only transparent thin folders are allowed.
A document wallet you cannot see into does not come in, however ordinary it looks.
The rest of the list: bags or purses except diaper bags and wallets; backpacks; cell phones; suitcases; weapons; electronics such as notebooks, iPods and PDAs; cameras; cosmetics; food, drinks and liquids. Not exhaustive.
Two exceptions are worth naming because they are unusually generous: diaper bags and wallets are permitted where bags generally are not.
Tell the guards about a pacemaker or hearing aid
If you use electronic medical devices (such as hearing aids, pace makers, etc.), please inform the consular guards about this as soon as you arrive for your interview.
This is a screening instruction, not a prohibition — the devices are fine, but the metal detector is the reason to speak up at the gate rather than at the machine.
Do not leave anything in the street
Most posts say only that they have no storage. Kyiv says what happens to the item:
It is a security risk to leave items on the street. Such items may be confiscated by local authorities.
And on waiting:
The Consular Section does not have a parking lot, and on-street parking is very difficult. Because of traffic and narrow streets surrounding the Consular Section, waiting on the street is both inconvenient and potentially dangerous, especially for children.
Taken together with the third-party rule, the practical shape of the morning is: come with a transparent folder and a wallet, have anyone accompanying you wait somewhere that is not the pavement outside, and have somewhere real — not the kerb — to leave a phone.
If you are asked for more documents afterwards
A refusal under 221(g) means something is missing or the case needs further processing. In Ukraine, documents requested under a 221(g) letter go to CGI, which delivers them to the consular section.
Why no slots appear
- Services may be limited. This is the first thing to check, on the embassy website, not here.
- The fee has not activated. Check the method you used on the Ukraine fee guide.
- You created a profile on AIS instead of USTravelDocs. It will never show Ukrainian appointments — see which appointment site is yours.
- The DS-160 was saved but never submitted, so no confirmation number exists.
Applicants outside Ukraine should note the standing rule that nonimmigrant visa applicants should apply in their country of residence or nationality, and that fees are non-refundable and non-transferable between posts.
Frequently asked questions
Is the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv issuing visas?
Its consular map listed Kyiv as providing services when we read it, and USTravelDocs directs applicants to the embassy website for what is currently available. Check ua.usembassy.gov before making travel plans.
How early should I arrive?
15 minutes before your appointment. The line is ordered by appointment time, so arriving earlier does not move you up.
Can my wife or friend wait inside with me?
No. The only exceptions are minor children under 16 with a parent or legal guardian, and people given specific permission by the Consular Section in advance.
Can I bring my car keys?
No. Kyiv lists car keys among the prohibited items, and there is no storage facility.
Can I bring my medication?
Kyiv's list prohibits medication — pills, sprays and syringes. If you have an electronic medical device such as a pacemaker or hearing aid, tell the guards when you arrive.
What folder should my documents be in?
A transparent thin folder. Non-transparent folders are prohibited.
Can I leave my phone outside?
No — the embassy warns that items left in the street may be confiscated by local authorities.
