Booking a U.S. Visa Appointment in Sri Lanka
Applicants in Sri Lanka book through USTravelDocs, not AIS, and there is one post — the U.S. Embassy in Colombo.
Nothing can be booked until the DS-160 is submitted and the visa fee has activated. The general sequence is on how to book a U.S. visa appointment; this page covers what Sri Lanka publishes and does not repeat elsewhere.

Two bans we have not found at any other post
Colombo's prohibited list carries the standard entries and then two that are genuinely its own.
Cosmetics. Written broadly and with examples:
Cosmetics (including but not limited to spray perfume/cologne and talcum/baby powder)
"Including but not limited to" means the two named items are illustrations, not the whole rule. If it is a cosmetic, assume it stays outside.
Long umbrellas, with a measurement.
Long Handled Umbrellas (longer than 40 cm when closed)
Forty centimetres closed is a compact folding umbrella. A full-length one does not come in. In a city with Colombo's rainfall this is not a trivial detail, and the embassy does not offer to hold it.
Phone storage: limited, not absent
Most posts say flatly that they cannot store anything. Colombo's wording is softer, and the difference is one word:
The Embassy has limited storage available for holding applicants' cell phones on the day of their interview, but there is no facility at the U.S. Embassy to store any of the other above listed prohibited items.
So a phone may be accepted, subject to capacity. A laptop, an umbrella, a bottle of cologne — no. Those have to be dealt with before you arrive.
The bag rule is a permitted list, not just a ban
Colombo tells you what you can carry, which is more useful than the usual prohibition:
Large shoulder bags/purses, travel bags, backpacks, briefcases or suitcases [are not permitted]. Only bags that can be carried by hand will be permitted like unsealed plastic bags containing application-related papers, small cloth bags and zip folders.
Note "unsealed" — a sealed plastic bag is a sealed package, and sealed envelopes and packages are separately barred. Note also that small cloth bags and zip folders are permitted here, where several other posts name cloth bags and zip folders among the items refused. This is a country-by-country rule, not a regional one; do not carry a neighbour's allowance across the border.
The rest of the list is standard: battery-operated or electronic devices including mobile phones, digital diaries, digital watches, pagers, cameras, cassettes, CDs, MP3s, floppy disks, laptops and portable music players; food and liquid items; sealed envelopes or packages; flammable items such as cigarettes, cigars, match boxes and lighters; sharp objects such as scissors, pen knives or nail files; and weapons or explosives of any kind. The list is explicitly not exhaustive.
There is no information window for walk-in visitors. Only applicants with scheduled interviews are admitted.
Accommodation gets you the waiting room, not the interview
Sri Lanka routes accommodation requests the same way Bangladesh does — through the expedited request option, after you have booked a regular appointment — but the outcome it promises is different and narrower, and worth reading closely:
Please note that reasonable accommodation will NOT result in an earlier appointment date, rather the applicant and their caregiver/immediate family members will be allowed to come to the consular waiting room together. Also note, this does not mean the caregiver/immediate family member will necessarily be allowed to attend the interview with the applicant either.
Compare that with Dhaka, which offers a less crowded time slot in the week of your appointment. Colombo offers company as far as the waiting room and stops there. If you are planning around someone accompanying an elderly parent or a child into the interview itself, Colombo does not promise that.
Requests must be made in English.
If you are asked for more documents afterwards
A refusal under 221(g) means something is missing or the case needs further processing. In Sri Lanka, documents requested under a 221(g) letter can be submitted at any Document Collection Center, which forwards them to the embassy — a more flexible arrangement than the single named courier some posts use.
Why no slots appear
- The fee has not activated. Check the method you used on the Sri Lanka fee guide.
- There is genuinely no availability. With one post there is nowhere else in the country to look.
- You created a profile on AIS instead of USTravelDocs. It will never show Sri Lankan appointments — see which appointment site is yours.
- The DS-160 was saved but never submitted, so no confirmation number exists.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring perfume or baby powder?
No. Colombo bars cosmetics, naming spray perfume, cologne and talcum or baby powder as examples of a broader category.
Can I bring an umbrella?
Only one that is 40 cm or shorter when closed. Longer handled umbrellas are refused, and the embassy will not store one.
Will they hold my phone?
Colombo has limited storage for cell phones — more than most posts offer, but capacity-dependent. Nothing else on the prohibited list can be stored.
What bag is allowed?
An unsealed plastic bag with your application papers, a small cloth bag, or a zip folder. Large shoulder bags, purses, travel bags, backpacks, briefcases and suitcases are refused.
Can my caregiver sit in on the interview?
Not necessarily. The embassy says an accommodation lets you reach the consular waiting room together and expressly does not promise the interview itself.
Where do 221(g) documents go?
To any Document Collection Center, which delivers them to the embassy.
