Booking a U.S. Visa Appointment in Nigeria
Nigeria is not on USTravelDocs any more. It books through AVITS at usvisaappt.com, and that change is the single most useful thing on this page, because the old address does not redirect you anywhere helpful.

AVITS serves 14 countries
AVITS is the third appointment system, alongside AIS and USTravelDocs, and as of 17 September 2026 it covers:
Africa: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone Europe: Belgium, France, the Netherlands

The barcode deadline here is two business days, not three
This is the rule most likely to cost you an interview, and AVITS gives you less time than AIS does. From the AVITS announcement dated 15 September 2026:
If you show up for your appointment and the DS-160 barcode does not match your appointment profile, you will not be allowed to attend your interview.
Please note: the latest our support team can update the DS-160 number is two business days before your appointment date.
Three practical consequences:
- Submit the DS-160 at least two business days before the interview, as the service asks.
- If you submitted a corrected DS-160 and the number in your profile is now wrong, you fix it by raising a support ticket from your account — not by editing a field yourself.
- Miss that two-business-day window and the route is to reschedule.
Guidance written for AIS countries commonly quotes three business days. That figure is correct for AIS and wrong here. See DS-160 mistakes for the full comparison.
Abuja stopped routine visa services
Effective 1 August 2026, the Department of State consolidated visa services in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Abuja is on the list of posts that ceased routine visa services. Those applicants:
must schedule an appointment and pay the required visa fee at the appropriate designated regional hub.
Both the appointment and the fee move to the hub.
Lagos is not on the cease list and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos is still shown as providing consular services.
Which hub serves former Abuja applicants is not published. The notice says "the appropriate designated regional hub" and never names it. Lagos being open is not the same as Lagos being the designated hub for Abuja's caseload, and we will not tell you it is — that would be a guess about a trip you would pay for. What AVITS does not publish
USTravelDocs country pages publish interview locations and detailed security rules — what bag you may carry, whether a phone can be checked. AVITS publishes none of that publicly. Its country page carries announcements, the consular exchange rate and a login, and the operational detail sits behind the account.
So we are not going to tell you what you may carry into your interview in Nigeria, because the service does not say. Your appointment confirmation and your own account are the sources for that, and the U.S. Mission Nigeria visa page carries post-specific notices.
Before you book
- The fee, the naira rate and the $15,000 bond are on the Nigeria fee guide — the bond applies from 21 January 2026 and is separate from the application fee.
- You cannot use the interview waiver. Nigeria has been among the fifty-five nationalities required to attend in person since 7 August 2025, including renewals — see the interview waiver.
- Nigeria is under Proclamation 10998's partial suspension. You may still apply and interview, but may be found ineligible, and the fee is not refunded — see the travel ban guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why does ustraveldocs.com/ng not work?
Because Nigeria moved to AVITS. The country path returns a 404 and the bare /ng/ redirects to a generic selector. Use usvisaappt.com.
How long do I have to fix a wrong DS-160 number?
Two business days before the appointment, via a support ticket from your AVITS account. That is one day less than the three business days AIS countries publish.
Can I still interview in Abuja?
Not for routine visa services — Abuja ceased those on 1 August 2026. Lagos is not on the cease list.
Which regional hub do Abuja applicants use?
It is not published. Applicants with scheduled interviews are told to monitor their email for specific guidance.
What can I bring into the interview?
AVITS does not publish a security list the way USTravelDocs does. Check your appointment confirmation and your post's own notices.
