Booking a U.S. Visa Appointment in Egypt
Applicants in Egypt book through USTravelDocs, not AIS. There is one interview post — the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.
Nothing can be booked until the DS-160 is submitted and the visa fee has activated. The general sequence is on how to book a U.S. visa appointment; this page covers what Egypt publishes.

Screening is explicit, and it is done twice
Egypt is unusually specific about the search itself:
All visitors must be screened prior to entering the Embassy and are subject to inspection via a walk-through metal detector and a hand-held metal detector.
Two detectors, not one. Anything metallic you are carrying will be found, which matters because the prohibited list is long and nothing is stored:
There is no facility at the U.S. Embassy to store prohibited items. You must make arrangements to store these items before entering.
What is refused at the door
- Mobile phones, digital diaries, digital watches, pagers, cameras, cassettes, CDs, MP3s, floppy disks, laptops and portable music players
- Large shoulder bags and purses — only bags carried by hand are permitted, and in practice a plastic bag of application-related papers
- Travel bags, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, leather and cloth bags, zip folders
- Food and liquid items — Egypt bans liquids explicitly, where several neighbouring posts name only food
- Sealed envelopes or packages
- Cigarettes, cigars, matches, lighters
- Sharp objects — scissors, pen knives, nail files
- Weapons or explosives of any kind
The list is explicitly not exhaustive.
The liquid ban is the one to plan around. Cairo is hot, the queue is outside, and a water bottle is the natural thing to carry. It is named as prohibited, so drink before you join the line rather than arriving with it.
No walk-ins, no information window
Due to security considerations, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the U.S. Embassy. Only visa applicants with scheduled interviews will be admitted.
There is no way to turn up and ask. Questions before the interview go through the appointment service.
Why no slots appear
- The fee has not activated. Check the method you used on the Egypt fee guide.
- There is genuinely no availability. Cairo is the only interview post listed.
- You created a profile on AIS instead of USTravelDocs. It will never show Egyptian appointments — see which appointment site is yours.
- The DS-160 was saved but never submitted, so no confirmation number exists.
If you are refused under 221(g)
Egypt's page carries the standard explanation: essential information is missing, or the case needs additional administrative processing, and the consular officer tells you at the end of the interview. See administrative processing and 221(g).
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring water to the embassy in Cairo?
No. Egypt's list bans food and liquid items, and there is no storage. Drink before you join the queue.
Can I bring my phone?
No. Mobile phones are prohibited and nothing is stored on site.
What will the security check involve?
A walk-through metal detector and a hand-held metal detector, for every visitor.
What bag may I carry?
Only one carried by hand — in practice a plastic bag holding your application papers. Backpacks, briefcases and suitcases are refused.
Is there a post outside Cairo?
The appointment service lists the Embassy in Cairo as the interview location for Egypt.
Can I visit without an appointment to ask a question?
No. There is no information window for walk-in visitors; only applicants with scheduled interviews are admitted.
