DS-160 Photo Size
The digital photo you upload to the DS-160 must be a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, under 240 KB. There is no separate "correct" size within that range — 600×600 and 1200×1200 are both accepted, and so is anything square in between.

Why a non-square photo gets rejected
The DS-160 upload form only accepts a 1:1 ratio. A rectangular photo — including the common 35 × 45 mm passport size used across Europe and much of Asia — will not upload, or will upload cropped in a way that cuts off the top of the head or the chin. Crop to square before uploading rather than letting the form do it.
What happens if the file is too large or too small
- Under 600 × 600 px: the form rejects the upload outright.
- Over 1200 × 1200 px: most cameras and phones default well above this. Resize down; there is no quality penalty for doing so, since 1200 px is already far more resolution than the interview process uses.
- Over 240 KB: almost always caused by a phone camera's default JPEG quality setting. Resizing to 1200×1200 or lower usually brings a phone photo under the limit; if not, re-export at a slightly lower JPEG quality (90% is still well above what this size needs).
Printed photo size, if your post asks for one
Some application processes ask applicants to bring a printed backup to the interview. That print is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to crown, and eyes 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches (28–35 mm) from the bottom edge. These are the same proportions as the digital file, just printed at a fixed physical size — a correctly framed digital photo will print correctly at 2×2 inches without re-cropping.

Does it matter whether I use 600×600 or 1200×1200?
No. Both pass. Use whatever your camera or phone produces after cropping to square and getting under 240 KB — there's no ranking or preference between sizes within the allowed range.
My phone photo is 4032×4032 pixels. Do I need special software to resize it?
No. Any basic photo editor, including the built-in crop/resize tools on iPhone and Android, can scale an image down. Or skip the manual step: the photo tool resizes automatically to a size that passes.
Is 2×2 inches the same photo as the digital upload, or a different one?
The same photo, printed at a fixed size. You don't need to take two separate photos — one correctly composed square digital file satisfies both the upload and the print, if your post requires a print.
